The Disco Effect

The Disco Effect is the brand I dreamed up to channel my love of music to raise money for local charities and good causes.

I was initially inspired to do this when I lost a close relative to cancer and wanted to find some way to express my thanks to the charities that support both patients and families.

Presenting the Hospice with a cheque from our comeback event at The Orange Rooms in Southampton in 2021

This fundraising activity is takes the form of organised events with local bars and restaurants where we put on an evening of great tunes with a disco influence. This means as well as nu-disco, soulful house, funk and garage are also in scope. I try and run them kind of like a mini-Glitterbox!

Monies raised typically come from some combination of ticketing (or honesty box), a prize raffle and whatever other fun and games we can think of. Local businesses sponsor prizes for the draw, and we have in the past had Glitterbox themselves donate prizes too.

Having successfully launched The Disco Effect in 2019 raising funds for the Countess Mountbatten Hospice in Southampton, I’ve since run further events post-lockdown in 2021 and 2022 raising healthy amounts for the Hospice supported by fellow local DJs.

Talking of the lockdown, we also continued our fundraising efforts during the winter of 2020, running a series of livestreams with our friends in the US, legendary DJs Glenn “Sweety G” Toby and Victor Simonelli.

So, if you’re interested in an event, then keep watching, or if you’re a venue and interested in co-hosting one, or otherwise a charity and interested in doing something together then please get in touch 👍🏻
